Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll has threatened to sanction chiefs who participate in or assist in illegal mining in the region.
He said that critical measures must be taken to rid the nation off the problem of illegal mining, regardless of the personalities involved.
Asantehene made this call during a Regional Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining held in Kumasi on Wednesday.
"If the government is to succeed in combating illegal mining, it needs to take a well-thought out multi- stakeholder approach" He said.
The Asantehene proposed creating a special fund to deal with investment and discovery along the gold belt.
"The mineral Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency's capacity should be urgently improved, and sufficiently resourced, so that, they can effectively regulate small- scale mining operations to ensure compliance and responsible practices" he lamented.
